Political Awareness and Involvement

In March of 1913, several founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. marched in the historic Suffrage March. Today, low voter statistic highlights the need in identifying ways for all citizens to exercise their voting power. Each of our programs has an advocacy component that is implemented under the auspices of Social Action when appropriate. NBCAC institute’s activities and programs to foster an environment of engagement and activism within our community such as:

Voter Registration Drives

Months before every federal, state, and city election, North Broward County Alumnae Chapter makes every effort to ensure the community we serve is not only informed on each candidate and the issues impacting them, but has the ability to cast a ballot as a registered voter. We canvass our community to help citizen register to vote at churches, city events, high school games and more.

Voter Education Program

Connect and Elect, provides the community with information on local candidates running for State Senate, State Representative, Commissioners, State Attorney, Supervisor of Elections, Judicial Seats and Sheriff offices. Engagement with candidates allows constituents to know where officials stand on certain issues. We provide our attendants with information on all constitutional amendments that will be present on the primary ballots for the primary and general elections.  This event increases civic engagement and reducing voter in our community.

Voter Restoration

The measure would restore the right to vote for people with prior felony convictions, except those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense, upon completion of their sentences. Currently, people with prior felony convictions in Florida are permanently disqualified to vote unless they receive clemency. Our goal is to acquire enough signatures to allow this amendment on the November 2018 ballot.

Arrive Alive

An open panel discussion in partnership with Advocates of Justice that brought in guest speakers such as State Attorney Neva Rainford-Smith, Public Defender Howard Finklestein, Broward Sheriff’s Office Captain Nesbitt, Private Attorney’s Sadika A. Lynch, Deaina Brown, Jennito Simon, Retired Officers Major Craig McQueen and Patricia Nicholas and the community at large on how to effectively interact with Law Enforcement Officers, while fostering mutual respect and protecting the civil rights of the community.

Delta Days at the Capital

A Legislative conference held annually with our state leader to increase members’ involvement in public policy making. The conference includes key policy makers, legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy skills development.

Connect and Elect

A political forum to review and provide understanding on all constitutional amendments that were present on the primary ballots for the primary and general elections. Over 30  local candidates running for State Senate, State Representative, Commissioners, State Attorney, Supervisor of Elections, Judicial Seats and Sheriff offices participated. Our purpose was to introduce and educate the community on all candidates running for office.  As well as, allow the candidates to provide their views on certain issues so constituents can make informed decisions on voting day.
